Sexual Orientation and Gay Marriage Essay - 1052 Words

Many people believe that America means equality and rights for everyone, but that is not necessarily true. Many people are still ostracized and discriminated against for things like sexual orientation. Personally, I believe that it’s nobody’s business who likes who, but that doesn’t mean homosexuals should be denied their rights everyone else has. Such as being able to wed, being able to have children, being able to express affection in public, etc. Only 19 states so far have legalized gay marriage. These include: California, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois (June 1s) , Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maine, Maryland, and Washington. Also, there is no antidiscrimination laws that apply or may apply to schools, meaning it must be okay to discriminate against LGBT kids. I t seems that since the 60s people have been pushing for gay rights, not only in America, but in other countries as well. I think we’ve passed the point where people think it’s okay to use â€Å"gay† as an insult. There are still many reports of hate crimes against gays. 14% of all hate crimes reported nationally are against gays. Gay rights are starting to become more of a priority in America. Right now, the Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA) is a current legislative effort to protect the civil rights of LGBT individuals. This act would prohibit job discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Another priority is the Local Law Enforcement Enhancemant Act (formerly known as the Hate Crimes Prevention Act). This act would extend federal hate crime jurisdiction to reach to crimes against individuals with a certain sexual orientation, gender identity, and so on. Not a lot of people support the movement for gay rights in America. Gays are thought of as les ser beings to a lot of people who don’t support their lives.
